What keeps Mignon from melting away, and Wilhelm from melting intoher, is language. Wilhelm declares, "My child! You are mine!" towhich she responds, "My father!...You will be my father!--I am yourchild" (II.14.82). Language here is imbricated with the incest taboo, but only because it is first of all "saying," "the breaking upof inwardness," the "for-the-other" incommensurate with"thematizing intentionality" (OB 50/48; 65/62). As Marc Redfieldargues, fatherhood "is a speech act, a performative that imposes itselfas truth" (Wilhelm is not really Mignon's father and even hispaternity of Felix is questioned), but "the paternal declaration"is not the act of a "self-positing subject," and thus not a figurefor the confusion of the rhetorical and the phenomenal that Redfield sees asindissociable from Bildung. (39) Rather, the assumption through language ofdeterminate positions arises from an exposure to the Other that tears us awayfrom self-positing (Wilhelm renounces his project of leaving Mignon), assigns us responsibility, and so restores to us a separation now discontinuouswith egoistic seif-aestheticization: "All my inwardness is invested inthe form of a despite-me, for-another... [which constitutes] significationpar excellence....It is the very fact of finding oneself while losingoneself" (OB 14/11).
