The adapters and cables in this article work with Mac computers with Thunderbolt 4 ports, Thunderbolt 3 ports, or a USB-C port. If your Mac only has one port, it doesn't support Thunderbolt connections.
Adapter For Mac
If you're using a USB-A cable with your device, use a USB-C to USB-A adapter like the Apple USB-C to USB Adapter, the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, or the Apple USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter to connect your device to your Mac.
If you're using an Ethernet cable with your device, use a USB-C to Ethernet adapter, such as the Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter. If your Mac has an Ethernet port, you can connect your Ethernet cable without an adapter.
If you're using an HDMI cable with your display, use the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter or other USB-C to HDMI adapter or cable. If your Mac has an HDMI port, you can connect your display to your Mac without an adapter.
If your Mac uses USB-C to charge, you can charge your Mac laptop with any USB-C power adapter or display. For the best charging experience, you should use a power adapter or display that provides at least the minimum wattage of the power adapter included with your MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or MacBook. Check power To find out how much power a connected power adapter or display provides, look at the certification label on the power adapter or check System Information on your Mac.
If your Mac uses USB-C to charge, you can charge your Mac laptop with any USB-C power adapter or display. You can safely use a power adapter or display with higher or lower wattage than the adapter included with your Mac. For the best charging experience, you should use the power adapter and cable included with your MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or MacBook.
Mac laptop computers come with a USB-C power adapter and charge cable. You can learn which power adapter and cable come with your Mac laptop computer, and find troubleshooting tips below. If you're having an issue with a non-Apple power adapter, try using the Apple power adapter and cable that came with your Mac laptop instead.
If your USB-C power adapter isn't charging your MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro, first try unplugging the power adapter from the power outlet, waiting a few seconds, and plugging it back in. If that doesn't help, check these things.
Make sure that you've connected your USB-C power adapter to a working power outlet. Unplug your USB-C power adapter from the power outlet, then plug in a known good device, such as a lamp or clock to confirm it powers on properly. If the power outlet works, connect your USB-C power adapter and try to charge your Mac. If your Mac still won't charge, shut down your Mac and close the display for 30 seconds, then open the display and try to charge your Mac again. If you're not using a Mac with Apple silicon, reset the SMC.

When you plug in the USB-C power adapter, it might spark where the blades of the plug enter the outlet. This is generally normal and can happen when you plug any electrical appliance into a power outlet.
Whether your Mac laptop with USB-C is in or out of warranty, you can bring it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store for evaluation. Be sure to bring your Mac, your USB-C power adapter, and any USB-C cables you use for charging.

The MagSafe connector and MagSafe port on your Mac laptop contain a magnet that can possibly erase data on a credit card or other magnetic devices. Keep magnetic media away from the end of the MagSafe adapter and away from the MagSafe port.
